Most British Beatles sites are in two cities. Liverpool has the childhood homes, the clubs and most of the statues, from David Webster's 1997 Lennon bronze on Mathew Street to Mendips, the house Lennon grew up in. London has the working years: Abbey Road Studios, the zebra crossing photographed on 8 August 1969, and blue plaques such as the one for the rooftop concert on Savile Row.

Across the Mersey, the band played the Tower Ballroom in New Brighton 27 times between 1961 and 1963. Fire destroyed it in 1969, and a 2011 blue plaque marks the site.

Further from Merseyside the sites are small and specific. A pub in Caversham carries a Nerk Twins plaque for 23 April 1960, when Lennon and McCartney played it as a duo. In the Highlands, Dingwall's Beatles Played Here plaque recalls a concert on 4 January 1963 that only 19 people are reported to have attended. The films left traces too: the Help! palace scenes at Cliveden in 1965, the Strawberry Fields Forever promo in Knole Park in 1967, and Magical Mystery Tour at West Malling, where a 2015 blue plaque is on the High Street. In Sutherland, the Durness garden recalls the holidays young Lennon spent on his aunt's croft.
