Beatles Statue Pier Head Liverpool: Hidden Details

The Beatles Statue stands at Pier Head on Liverpool's waterfront, near Brunswick Street and Canada Boulevard, in front of the Cunard Building. Sculptor Andy Edwards cast the four band members in bronze, walking side by side. The Cavern Club donated it, and it was unveiled on 4 December 2015, 50 years after the Beatles' last Liverpool concert.

A gift timed to the last Liverpool concert

The Beatles last played Liverpool at the Empire on 5 December 1965. Fifty years later, on 4 December 2015, deputy mayor Ann O'Byrne and Julia Baird, John Lennon's sister, unveiled this group at Pier Head. The Cavern Club presented it to the city. A Cavern Club article, reposted by Dale Liverpool Tours, says Cavern City Tours paid about £200,000 for it.

The idea didn't start with a sculptor. According to the same article and the Beatles Story, Chris Butler, managing director of Castle Fine Art Foundry, went looking for photos of the band on the waterfront and settled on shots taken at Pier Head in 1963. The image used on the Live at the BBC album was another reference. Edwards then modelled the four in suits, walking together. He told the BBC he hoped the spot would become a place of ritual.

Four details hidden in the bronze

Each figure carries a small object tied to that Beatle. They're easy to walk past.

The sources differ slightly on the acorns. Wikipedia says they came from near the Dakota, and the Cavern Club piece says Central Park. Either way, New York is the connection.

Size and weight: the figures don't agree

The statue is often described as life-size. The better sources say otherwise: Wikipedia, citing Liverpool Express, calls the figures larger than the real men, and Daytrippin puts them a few feet taller. The weight is 1.2 tonnes according to the Beatles Story and about 1.3 tons according to Daytrippin. We haven't found an official height, so we don't give one.

Not the only Beatles statue in Liverpool

Two other Beatles sculptures in the city get mixed up with this one. Arthur Dooley's wall sculpture Four Lads Who Shook the World is on Mathew Street, though at least one Commons photo of the Pier Head group uses that title. Mathew Street also has David Webster's solo John Lennon statue, about 580 m from here in a straight line, and a 2018 bench group of all four Beatles at the Rubber Soul complex.

The Beatles Story at Royal Albert Dock is about 650 m south, and the John Lennon Peace Monument at Kings Dock is about 940 m away.
