Cliveden: Where the Beatles Filmed Help!'s Buckingham Palace Scenes

The Beatles filmed the Buckingham Palace scenes of Help! at Cliveden, a stately home at Taplow near Maidenhead, on 10 and 11 May 1965. The card game was shot in the French Dining Room and the intermission in the woods. The house is now a hotel on a National Trust estate. Nothing on site marks the filming.

Buckingham Palace, played by a house in Buckinghamshire

In Help! the Beatles take refuge at Buckingham Palace. The rooms on screen belong to Cliveden, once the Astor family's country house. Richard Lester's crew arrived on Monday 10 May 1965 for two days. The shoot had started in the Bahamas on 23 February, and by the end of Tuesday 11 May the band had put in 54 days on the film. Cliveden was their final location. The film opened in Britain on 29 July 1965.

Rooms and grounds used

The scene of the four playing cards was shot in the French Dining Room, in the south-west corner of the house. The room is named for its gilded 18th-century Rococo panelling, which came from the Château d'Asnières near Paris and was bought for Cliveden by the first Viscount Astor in 1897. Also filmed here was the moment the Beatles lean out of a window to see what the poison gas has done. The intermission was shot outside, in the Bluebell Woods on the estate.

A race on the lawns

Between set-ups at Cliveden the Beatles took on the crew in a relay race around the gardens, with teams of six drawn from the electricians, the carpenters and the camera department. Neil Aspinall and their driver Alf Bicknell ran for the Beatles' team, which won. Someone on the crew filmed it on an 8mm home movie camera.

Visiting Cliveden now

The National Trust owns the estate. It covers more than 370 acres of formal gardens and woodland, and the house itself is leased out as a five-star hotel. That means the French Dining Room is a hotel dining room, not a museum space. Non-guests can see a few rooms on short National Trust house visits, which in the 2026 season run on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays between 11:00 and 12:30 from March to October, with tickets issued on the day at the information centre by the car park. The grounds are ticketed.

The nearest stations are Taplow, about 2.5 miles away, and Burnham, about 3 miles, both on the line from London Paddington to Reading. The Trust recommends a taxi, since the main roads are not safe to walk.
