American Beatles sites are mostly about arrival. George Harrison came first, in September 1963, to visit his sister Louise in Benton, Illinois. A state marker in Benton records the stay, and a second in Eldorado marks the night he sat in with a local band, the Four Vests.

The band followed in February 1964: the Ed Sullivan Theater on 9 February, their first US concert at the Washington Coliseum on 11 February and Carnegie Hall the next day. Summer tours from 1964 to 1966 took them to stadiums and arenas across the country, and many are gone. Shea Stadium, Comiskey Park and Candlestick Park, site of the last paid concert on 29 August 1966, have all been demolished, and nothing on their sites mentions the band. At the Gator Bowl in September 1964 they said they would not play to a segregated audience, and the show went ahead integrated.

Lennon's own American years centre on New York. He lived at the Dakota from 1973 and was shot in its archway on 8 December 1980. Across the street, Strawberry Fields in Central Park was dedicated on 9 October 1985 as the city's Lennon memorial. Smaller tributes elsewhere include a walking bronze in Tampa and a repainted mural in San Diego.
