The Beatles at the Grugahalle, Essen, 25 June 1966

The Grugahalle is a large event hall in Essen-Rüttenscheid, beside the Grugapark. On 25 June 1966 the Beatles played two concerts there, at 17:00 and 21:00, as the second stop of their three-city Bravo tour of West Germany. The 1958 hall still hosts events and is a listed building. No Beatles plaque or marker has been recorded there.

The hall in 1966 and now

The Grugahalle opened in October 1958. Its architects, Ernst Friedrich Brockmann and Gerd Lichtenhahn, gave it a butterfly-shaped roof that spans roughly 80 by 80 metres with no columns inside. When the Beatles came it was described as the largest event hall in West Germany, with 8,000 seats. Today it seats about 7,700, or about 10,000 with the floor cleared.

The building has been a protected monument since 2000. It still hosts concerts, sport, political events and company shareholder meetings. The foyer was modernised by 2025, and in 2024 the outside was repainted metallic white, which matches what the architects originally intended.

From Munich on the Queen's train

Essen was the middle date of the Bravo-Beatles-Blitztournee, a short tour organised with the youth magazine Bravo. It opened at the Circus-Krone-Bau in Munich and ended in Hamburg the day after Essen. The band crossed the country on a special train that Queen Elizabeth II had used on her state visit to West Germany the year before. It left Munich at about 8:30 on the morning of the 25th, and around midnight, after the second Essen show, the Beatles went on by train to Hamburg.

Two shows, one set

The first concert began at 17:00 and the second at 21:00, with a press conference in between. Cliff Bennett and the Rebel Rousers, The Rattles, and Peter and Gordon played before the Beatles on every date of the tour. The Beatles were on stage for about half an hour each time. They played the same 11 songs at both shows, starting with Rock And Roll Music and ending with I'm Down. An audience tape of the afternoon show survives.

Keith Badman's chronology The Beatles: Off the Record says that Mal Evans brought the first acetate of the new album Revolver to the band in their Essen dressing room.

The crowd, and how it was handled

The City of Essen puts the day's attendance at 17,000. The German tour history counts about 8,025 per show, so the two figures roughly agree if the city's number covers both concerts. Many fans without tickets stood outside the hall.

A correspondent for Beatles Monthly called the Essen concerts frightening because police used tear gas and guard dogs on fans. The German tour history gives no details of incidents in Essen. The rougher scenes it does describe took place the next day in Hamburg.

No plaque at the Grugahalle

No Beatles plaque or marker has been recorded at the Grugahalle. For the 60th anniversary, the city marked the date with a tribute concert by the band GET BACK in the Grugapark music pavilion on 26 June 2026, not with a plaque on the hall.
