Beatles Memorials in Obertauern, Austria

Obertauern, a ski resort in Austria's Salzburg region, has three separate Beatles memorials marking the week in March 1965 when the band filmed the snow scenes for Help! there. Four life-size bronzes stand outside Sporthotel Edelweiss, a large Help!-pose monument sits by the Kirchbühellift, and a piano replica stands at the Grünwaldkopfbahn top station.

Three memorials in three places

The Beatles tributes are spread around the resort, and a lot of what's written online muddles them. The big Help!-pose sculpture is on the piste at the Kirchbühellift, not at the hotel. The hotel has four life-size bronzes. The Grünwaldkopf memorial is the piano itself, not something standing next to one. If you're searching in German, look for "Beatles Denkmal Obertauern."

In a straight line from the hotel, the Kirchbühellift monument is about 0.8 km west and the piano about 2 km north-west. The coordinates in the facts box are for the hotel bronzes.

A week of Help! in the snow, March 1965

The Beatles landed at Salzburg's Maxglan airfield at 14:18 on 13 March 1965 and gave a press conference at the Hotel Österreichischer Hof, now the Hotel Sacher Salzburg. Obertauern got the job because late-winter snow there was reliable and hardly anyone had heard of the place, which meant filming without crowds.

None of the four could ski, so local instructors doubled for all of them. Herbert Lürzer stood in for Paul McCartney and later went on to own the Edelweiss; Gerhard Krings doubled George Harrison. Filming in Obertauern finished on 20 March. That makes the stay about a week, not the two weeks you'll see quoted elsewhere.

On 18 March the band gatecrashed the assistant director's birthday party at the Skistall, the bar of the Hotel Marietta, and played. That was the only Beatles performance ever in Austria. Nobody took photos and nobody recorded it. The Beatles were staying at the Edelweiss, and some articles say they played for guests at "their" hotel, but the more detailed accounts put the session at the Marietta.

The Beatles piano at Grünwaldkopf

For the snow scene, director Richard Lester borrowed the Marietta owner's grand piano. A helicopter flew it up the mountain, and with all four Beatles standing on top it sank knee-deep into the snow. It came back ruined. The owner never got compensation.

A replica now stands beside the top station of the Grünwaldkopfbahn. OpenStreetMap contributors describe it as a steel piano with HELP on it. Press coverage only calls it a replica, so the steel part is unconfirmed, and we couldn't find when it was put there.

Since it's at a lift top station, you reach it by riding the Grünwaldkopfbahn or by hiking up. We haven't verified lift times, so check locally first.

The Help! monument at the Kirchbühellift

This is the big one. It measures 7 meters wide and 4 meters high, weighs 1.5 tonnes, and has the four figures standing on the BEATLES lettering with their arms in the Help! pose. derStandard described it as newly installed in an article from 14 January 2015, so it went up at least two months before the hotel bronzes. Nobody seems to have recorded the exact date.

Two of the old ski doubles couldn't agree on which figure was theirs. In derStandard's 2015 piece, Krings and Lürzer each pointed out "their" Beatle.

For the photo, stand downhill so you get both the lettering and the outstretched arms in frame.

Bronzes and Beatles rooms at Sporthotel Edelweiss

The Lürzer family unveiled the four bronzes by the hotel entrance on 14 March 2015, and the hotel pitches them to guests as a photo spot. Its history page says that was "exactly 60 years" after the filming. It was 50.

The hotel sits at 1,750 meters with the piste right alongside. You can still book the rooms the band stayed in, 214, 216, 218 and 219, each named after a Beatle. Don't expect 1965 decor; they've been modernized.

Postbus route 280 between Radstadt and Tamsweg runs through Obertauern if you're coming without a car. We couldn't confirm which stop is closest to the hotel.

Anniversaries and the village chronicle

For the 50th anniversary Obertauern held a Beatles jubilee week, 14 to 21 March 2015. The 60th got a longer "Home of Beatles" program from 6 March to 1 May 2025, with a photo exhibition, a Help! screening and a symphonic tribute concert by the Philharmonie Salzburg. Some guides mention yearly March celebrations, but we found records only of those two anniversaries.
