The best-known Lennon walls began as public messages rather than commissioned art, and the authorities cleared more than one of them.
The Lennon Wall in Prague is the original. It is the garden wall of the Order of Malta in Malá Strana, where a chalk tribute in December 1980 grew into a site of protest against the communist regime. Its name was borrowed elsewhere. Hong Kong's Lennon Wall was a staircase of sticky notes at the Central Government Complex in Admiralty, put up in October 2014 and in June 2019 and cleared both times.
In Sofia, a stone relief of Lennon hung on the city's Lennon Wall from December 2010 until late 2018. Nobody knows who removed it. The wall is still there.
Liverpool's Four Lads Who Shook the World is the exception: a 1974 wall sculpture by Arthur Dooley on Mathew Street, showing a Madonna figure for the city holding the infant Beatles.
