The garden is the oldest form of Lennon memorial: the first two opened in 1985, five years after his death, and both are free to enter. Strawberry Fields in Central Park, designed by Bruce Kelly with Yoko Ono, was dedicated on 9 October 1985. Parco John Lennon in Castelnuovo Rangone, near Modena, opened on 8 December 1985 as Italy's first public space named after Lennon.

Both Scottish gardens date from 2002. The Durness garden at the village hall has three stone slabs recalling the holidays young Lennon spent on his aunt's croft. Campbeltown's garden, opened in November 2002, centres on Jane Robbins's bronze of Linda McCartney holding a lamb, a gift from Paul McCartney.

The only living memorial is George Harrison's memorial tree in Griffith Park, Los Angeles. The 2004 pine was lost to bark beetles in 2014 and replaced by a yew pine in 2015.
